October 29. 1- 4pm Paint with Artist Shawn Dell Joyce. In this fast-paced one day workshop, we will learn to start with a Notan sketch, make an underpainting, then use a system where we match colors to values by numbers and paint the scene in front of us in a new and colorful way. This concept is what “paint by numbers” is based on, and is a great exercise for plein air painters. “Value does all the work, color gets all the credit!” Timeline: 1pm Demonstration of process and Notan Everyone has time to do a Notan 1:30pm Demo Value sketch and fill in “color as value” chart Everyone has time to do a Value sketch and color chart 2:30pm Demo Notan underpainting on surface Everyone has time to underpaint based on Notan 3pm Demo Substituting color as value and lead group step-by-step Through the process starting with darks and working to lights. 4pm evaluation and group critique Key take aways: Color can be substitutes based on value (any color, any value, the wilder the color the more Fauvist the painting will look!) Always start with a value sketch which identifies 5 values (minimum) Know your focal point and identify it before you make the painting (in the value sketch) Try not to tone and tint with black and white, instead use warm and cool Materials: Worksheets will be provided Each participant will be supplied an Ampersand Pastelbord, Aquabord or Gessobord depending on their media courtesy of Ampersand Surfaces. Bring your favorite media (oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, gouache) Bring a surface to paint on-if you don’t want to use your Ampersand board Bring a brush and container for underpainting Plein air set up and gear Pencil & eraser $100 member $125 non member
