Watercolor Sand and Shadows
Thurs Feb 5, 2026 9:30am-4:30pm
When creating a painting, we focus on shapes rather than “things.” Using a limited palette, the class will explore sand and shadows by interpreting every element—buildings, grasses, rocks, reflections, trees, and more—as shapes with distinct edges and textures. Mastering these edges, along with understanding value, color, and variety, helps guide the viewer’s experience.
In the morning, Paul will introduce the subject and key considerations before painting. The drawing will be completed before lunch, and in the afternoon he will demonstrate his damp-paper technique, which improves watercolor control and extends working time.

Paul will cover the simple guiding principles behind successful vignettes and demonstrate how to draw with a wooden match and permanent ink—an easy, expressive method. In the morning, he’ll explain the key elements of vignette design and lead a step-by-step drawing session to prepare for the afternoon painting

When creating a painting, we focus on shapes, not “things.” Using a limited palette, the class will paint a dory on calm water by interpreting every element—boats, buildings, grasses, rocks, reflections, and trees—as shapes with distinct perimeter edges and textures. Mastering these edges, along with value, color, and variety, is essential to guiding how viewers interpret the scene. In the morning, Paul will introduce the subject and key considerations before painting. The drawing will be completed before lunch, and in the afternoon, Paul will demonstrate his damp-paper technique, which improves watercolor control and extends working time.

Line and Wash Vignette – The Old Filling Station
Fri Mar 6, 2026 9:30am-4:30pm
Are you up for a challenge? The class will use this planned drawing for the vignette painting. Paul will share his photo reference briefly to discuss his design. If it is not your habit to make a sketch, this will help you see the benefits of the process. The drawing will be done using a wooden match and ink followed by watercolor. “Vignette” is a term meaning “incomplete” as areas of the paper will remain blank. A vignette is an interesting and entertaining design not only for the painter but for the viewer.
Along with Paul’s guidance, the drawing is created for the afternoon painting session. At 3:30 an evaluation will be held on the day’s work.
