Line and Wash Vignette - Old Church

Thurs Jan 8, 2026 9:30am-4:30pm This class will cover the design and creation of a vignette painting in line and wash. Vignette is a term that means “incomplete” where areas of the paper will remain blank. The vignette is an entertaining design for a painting, not only for the painter but for the viewer. Vignettes have sparkle even though they look unfinished. There are basic rules to keep in mind when painting a vignette and are easily utilized. The drawing will be done in line and wash using a wooden match and permanent ink. This method of drawing and painting is said to make the creation of a painting easier. In the morning, Paul will explain the important facets of this painting design and demonstrate the different details to be considered. Together the drawing is created and prepared for the afternoon painting session. A brief evaluation of the work done in class will be held at 3:30. Instructor: Paul Allen Taylor $140 MDCA members $170 MDCA non-members

Barn by the Lake

Fri Jan 9, 2026 9:30am-4:30pm When we create a painting, we must think about “shapes” not “things”. Using a limited palette, the class will create this painting of a barn by water. All objects in the painting are shapes, not real things. We “symbolize” what we want the person viewing our paintings to see. Whether it’s a building, grasses, rocks, reflections, trees, or other objects, each has a shape and texture at the perimeter edge. It’s important to master these edges. Combined with these concepts is Value, Color and Variety. In the morning, Paul will introduce the subject and what to consider before painting. The drawing is prepared for the afternoon, then after lunch Paul demonstrates his damp paper technique for controlling watercolor and extending working time. Instructor: Paul Allen Taylor $140 MDCA members $170 MDCA non-members
